The White Shirt

Monday flew by in a flash. I spent some time cleaning up the basement; putting away items in the workroom (which is a storage room really) and cleaning up the exercise and sewing room. I do love clean areas. It is just the middle of January, two weeks into the renovation, and I am tired of the dust and mess in the dining and living rooms and the hall/front entrance. I have another 6 weeks to endure. The Spousal Unit is in his element by the way. He is doing what he loves to do and I am impressed with his work. The living and dining rooms look bright rather than dark and dingy. The walls are being mudded except for one section; we need a plug-in installed and are waiting for the electrician to come and do it. He has put 2 coats of primer on the the upper cupboards in the front entrance and it is making that area look brighter also.

I got the hem and button holes and buttons done on the white shirt. I chose tiny 2 hole buttons as this shirt has to be plain, plain, plain. The only detail is the top stitching which is subtle.

I am also proud of myself for putting the buttons on right away. My confession – I hate putting on buttons. I can screw the alignment up royally. Daughter does a way better job of buttons than I do.

For everyone’s information, this is the type of shirt I would wear. I do not wear bling; a subtle silver or gold thread in a stripe is bling for me. It is not my personality. No matter how hard some people try to get me to wear it, IT. IS. NOT. ME.

I did not get at the window topper yesterday but I did find a good tutorial on planning and sewing toppers. I now know I need three widths of the fabric and each piece needs to be 21” long so I will be using over 1.5 meters of fabric. That will leave about .4 meter for a table runner. I will need to purchase two plain or tonal fabrics for that plus a piece for the backing. Not too bad. Once the pieces are cut out, it won’t take too long to make them or at least I hope it doesn’t.

I didn’t walk again today. It was too cold. I did get outside though and it didn’t impress me at all, the wind was not nice. We live in a north/south valley and those artic north winds just whip in (as do the south winds). We can also get some pretty cold east winds too. In the big scheme of things, the dog didn’t want to be outside for long either. And, Elliott only sniffed at the door before turning around and returning to the dog’s bed in front of the fireplace. Even the Spousal Unit put on his winter coat when he went to feed the horses this morning. If I had my snow pants, I would have been out there if it was calm but they are missing; borrowed and not returned.

The dratted tablecloth is on hold. I have 1000 sheets of paper to fold in half for Family Literacy Day. They need to be out tomorrow along with another 860 sheets. So I know I have two long sessions of folding. At least I can do it and watch TV.

Until tomorrow.............................

Ann, on buttons -- this is how I do them and Kathleen Fasanella over at Fashion Incubator had a post about doing them the same way. Basically you do the holes first, then overlap the bands and mark with chalk/pencil. I adjust to make sure the mark is in the centre of the band but it never fails. Use the buttonholes as your button guide and you won't have problems.

That white shirt is so crisp and clean, Ann!

I can mess up buttons, too. This is what I do now: start with the top button, lay the buttonhole side over the button side, and stick a pin straight down through the buttonhole in the middle. There's your first button placement. Attach that button. Now, button that button, lining up the plackets again, and stick a pin in the next buttonhole down in the middle. Attach the 2nd button. Button it. And keep going, one at a time, down the front of the shirt, buttoning as you go.

I get much better alignment this way.

The shirt looks great! I once made a white western-style shirt, and I used white lace for the yokes, cuffs and collar. It was dressy, but not over the top. Oh, and I absolutely hate house construction. I've lived through a lot of it. This summer we got all new windows, new sills, new siding, and also had to replace damaged ceilings in the living room, kitchen and one bedroom. The mess was awful!
